Masala Puri

I have seen Masala Puri mainly in Bangalore. 'The' place to have this is with the roadside hawker. You will find them almost everywhere(really...:)!) and trust me this is one popular dish. They start their stall only by say 6 ish in the evening and by say 8-9, he is done with it, but the number of people trickling never stops... In Chennai i find these stalls too but the big places don't have anything called Masal Puri (Yaa.. its prounced as Masal Puri :))..

Many people crib about how unhygienic the surrounding is...and its not good to have street food..yaa don't deny but the taste they bring about..its quite unbeatable! I am a sucker for street food and we miss this of my hometown a lot :)

Masala Puri

Ingredients
1. Dried Peas - 1 cup ( soaked overnight)
2. Carrot - 1/2 cup (grated)
3. Onion - 1 cup ( finely chopped)
4. Chat Masala powder - 1tsp
5. Garam Masala powder - 1tsp
6. Red Chilli Powder - 1 tsp
7. Pani Puri's - 20
8. Sev - 1 cup
9. Jeera/ Cumin - 1/2 tsp
10. Green Chutney - 1-2 tsp
11. Sweet/Tamarind Chutney - 1-2 tsp
12. Oil -1tsp
13. Salt - to taste

Preparation Time!!
1. Pressure cook the Peas with enough waster to cover it and keep it for 2-3 whistles. Its should be completely mashed. A small comparison would be like how we use peas for sundal
2. In a pan, add 1 tsp of oil, add jeera. Once it turns light brown, add onion(1/2 cup) and sauté well till light pink
3. Then add peas along with water and add all the powders ( chat, gram masala, red chilli) and salt
4. Boil this well, till the raw smell of powders go and the peas get the flavor too. Say takes around 10-12 minutes and then keep on lowest flame ( The idea is have hot peas all time!)

Making a plate of Masal Puri
1. Take a small plate, crush the Pani-puri's. Ya for Masal Puri, you need the Pani-puri's not sev -puri
2. Then on that add a generous helping of peas masala
3. Add green chutney and sweet chutney
3. Add grated carrot all over, raw onion and follow it up with sev and enjoy madi ..

Serving - 3-4 small plates
Duration - Half hour
