Kollu/Horesgram Rasam

Today, for the third day of Marathon, i choose Kollu or Horsegram Rasam. This is an extremely healthy gram, which is said to have medicinal properties! This helps with weight loss too.. Amma would do this often and she would insist that i am going to be super active like a horse ;), if i had that.. As i prepared this, i just remembered all those and couldn't help but smile and miss those days...

Ingredients
1. Kollu/Horse gram - 2 fist full ( half of a 1/4th cup)
2. Tomatoes - 2-3
3. Rasam powder - 2tsp
4. Curry Leaves - a sprig
5. Turmeric powder - 1/4th tsp
6. Hing - a pinch
7. Water - 6 cups
8. Salt - to taste
9. Cilantro - a sprig

To Grind
1. Green Chillies - 2
2. Coconut - 2 tbsp
3. Kollu - 1-2 tsp

To Temper
1. Ghee - 1 tsp
2. Mustard seeds - 1 tsp

Preparation Time!!
1a. Soak Kollu in water overnight
1b. Pressure cook the soaked Kollu with a little water for upto 2-3 whistles
2. Take finely chopped tomatoes, water in a pan. To this add curry leaves, rasam powder, hing, turmeric & salt and boil
3. Meanwhile, take the chillies, coconut, kollu(1-2tsp), along with a little water in a blender and make a fine paste. Keep aside
4. Once, the tomatoes are cooked, add the remaining cooked kollu in the rasam and let it boil for 3-4 minutes
5. Then, add the ground paste and let it simmer for a minute or two.Once a light froth is formed, remove off flame
6. Take ghee in a pan, add ghee. Once warm, add mustard seeds and let it splutter
6. Temper the rasam with mustard seeds and garnish with cilantro

Serve with hot rice, ghee & karamedu... I served with Cabbage karamedu :).The best part is you get something to bite as you have saathamudhu sadham, thanks to kollu! Every time i put that in a bowl, it settles down & can't really show that i pics :(
