Mysore Rasam

Today, for the fourth day of the Marathon, i choose Mysore Rasam. I have no idea, why it is called so..and i have also noticed that this recipe varies across all households :).. It amazes me sometimes, that a simple dish can be done in so many different ways..I guess, it has been been modified as per each household's taste.. as long as it tastes yum, i am not complaining!
This is the recipe done in our house. My MIL does this and i have learnt the same from her. Its simple, light and very tasty!







Ingredients
1. Toor dal - 1-2 tbsp
2. Tamarind paste - 1tsp
3. Tomato - 1
4. Curry Leaves - a sprig
5. Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
6. Salt - to taste
7. Water - 4 cups + 1/4 cup
8. Hing - a pinch
9. Cilantro - a sprig


To Roast & Grind
1. Dhania/Corinader seeds - 1/2 tsp
2. Toor dal - 1 tsp
3. Pepper -1/2 tsp
4. Jeera/Cumin - 1/2 tsp
5. Red Chillies - 1
6. Coconut - 1tsp
7. Hing - a pinch
8. Ghee - 1tsp


Tempering
1. Ghee - 1tsp
2. Mustard seeds - 1 tsp




Preparation Time!!
1a. Take 1-2tbsp of cooked toor dal and lightly mash it. Add 1/4 cup water to it and keep aside
1b. In a vessel, take tamarind paste, water, tomatoes. To this add curry leaves, hing, turmeric powder and salt. Let it boil
2. Meanwhile, as the rasam is getting boiled, take a pan, add ghee. When warm, add all ingredients mentioned in the 'To roast & grind' table, except for jeera and coconut
3. Roast till the ingredients turn light brown. Remove and cool it
4. To this mixture, add coconut and grind to a semi-coarse powder
5. Then, add jeera and pulse/whip it, once or twice. Now, powder is ready,keep aside
6. Once the raw smell of tamarind goes & tomatoes are cooked, add this ground powder to the rasam and reduce flame
7. To this add the toor dal water and let it simmer, till a light froth is formed
8. Remove off flame & temper with mustard seeds and garnish with cilantro


Serve hot with rice, ghee & Karamedu. I served with Kathrika Podi Karamedu and we enjoyed our Sunday meal :)

  10. Never knew there are so many kinds of rasam. I only make one type - a tomato rasam - that i learned from my MIL too. Mysore rasam looks beautiful
